Curriculum Adoption FAQs
Lynden School District follows a structured guided process for selecting instructional materials, as outlined in District Policy 2020 Course Design, Selection and Adoption of Instructional Materials.
Each adoption begins with the formation of a professional committee made up of content-area educators. This team reviews the Washington State learning standards along with the latest educational research to develop a thoughtful scope and sequence for student learning.
Promising instructional materials are often field tested in classrooms, allowing teachers to evaluate how well they support student engagement and understanding. After careful consideration, the committee identifies its top choice of materials and presents a formal recommendation to the Instructional Materials Committee (IMC) for review and recommendation.
Lynden School District is committed to ensuring that all course design and core instructional materials are evaluated, adopted and developed with a plan for curriculum growth.
All adopted instructional materials must meet the expectations set by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). These materials are guided by Washington State’s Learning Standards, which outline what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. As required by RCW 28A.655.070, OSPI develops, adopts, and periodically updates these standards to reflect evolving educational goals and student needs.
The Instructional Materials Committee (IMC) plays a vital role and is the only committee to recommend curriculum materials to the School Board for adoption. The IMC consists of both internal and external stakeholders and carefully reviews proposed core instructional resources to ensure they align with the state and federal laws, meet the goals and learning objectives, and follow the procedures outlined by the committee.
At Lynden School District, we believe that a truly effective curriculum is more than just a collection of lessons, it’s a powerful foundation for meaningful learning. High-quality instructional materials, when aligned with Washington State Learning Standards and informed by current research, empower our outstanding teachers to deliver engaging, differentiated instruction with confidence.
We are committed to providing a viable, well-structured curriculum so that teachers don’t need to spend time searching for supplemental resources or patching gaps. Instead, they can focus on what they do best: inspiring students and responding to their diverse learning needs.
Of course, curriculum is just one part of student success. It also depends on excellent teaching, strong school partnerships with caregivers and trusted adults, and a wide network of student support. Every curriculum adoption in our district reflects our shared commitment to high-quality teaching and a thriving learning environment for all.
