Governor’s Announcement to Close Schools for the Rest of the Year

Greetings Families and Staff,

I am sure most, if not all of you, have heard about Governor Inslee’s announcement this afternoon that on-site learning in schools will be closed for the remainder of the school year. While this announcement was not a total surprise, it is still a significant shock and brings with it a real feeling of loss and sorrow that we will not come back into session and finish out the year and celebrate with students. This announcement also marks a significant change in our planning for student learning until the end of the school year. 

Up until today, our planning has been on the premise that we were in short term closure and providing work for students was based on a “review and reinforce” model. Because there were signals from state agencies that school would likely to be closed for a longer period, we had already begun to talk about how to move to a “remote teaching” model that would “continue learning” in a more significant manner. Our challenge and commitment, as we enter this new phase will be to put into place a more rigorous and accountable student learning plan for all students under these new conditions.

Closure of school for the rest of the school year brings with it a host of questions and challenges for families, students, and school staff. There is still some guidance expected from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the State Board of Education (SBE) that will inform what we do. We will be working on questions such as how to assign grades and grant credit, how to deal with graduation requirements, how to provide accommodations for students, how to provide for the continuation of learning at each level, and how to provide a more rigorous and accountable system through both an online format and/or by providing work to students in a hard copy format. All of these will be needed to implement a learning plan that to the best of our ability addresses grade level standards and skills.

As I think about the challenges ahead of us, I am confident that this circumstance is also a catalyst for creativity and ingenuity as we discover new ways to engage and work differently. We will miss seeing our students; nothing can take the place of face-to-face contact. And, we will rise to the occasion and look forward to working with families over the course of the next couple of months.

There is much more ground to cover in order ensure continuation of learning and we have already begun that work in anticipation of the Governor’s announcement this afternoon. School Principals and I will continue to provide updates on what is happening behind the scenes as well as what you can expect from your child’s school and teachers.
