Bernice Vossbeck Elementary is named in honor of a lifelong Lynden educator and community leader whose influence continues to shape our district. Born in Lynden in 1923, Bernice graduated from Lynden High School and earned her teaching certificate from Western Washington University before beginning her career in the Lynden School District in 1945.

Bernice served the district for forty years, teaching from 1945 to 1972 and later serving as principal at Fisher Elementary beginning in 1973. Her decades of dedication left a meaningful mark on generations of students, staff, and families. In recognition of her impact, she received multiple district and state honors, and in 1997 the district named its third elementary school after her.

Beyond education, Bernice was deeply engaged in the Lynden community. She was an avid gardener, a Master Gardener, and an active member of local organizations such as Friends of the Library, the Lynden Pioneer Museum, the Lynden Garden Club and the Washington State Retired Teachers Association. She also served on advisory boards supporting Berthusen Park, Lynden Parks and Trails and the Whatcom County Endowment Board.

Bernice passed away at age 95, yet her legacy continues. Her name represents leadership, service and a deep commitment to community—values that continue to guide our work with students and families today.
