Isom Elementary honors the legacy of Elbert R. Isom, a dedicated educator, coach and district leader whose influence helped shape Lynden Schools over several decades. Mr. Isom began his Lynden career in 1930 as a high school teacher and basketball coach, later becoming principal in 1950 and serving as the district’s third superintendent from 1954 to 1967.

A gifted athlete in his youth, he captained both the football and basketball teams in high school and won a state football title his senior year. His love of athletics carried into his coaching career, where he led the Lynden High School basketball program from 1930 to 1946. Under his leadership, the team played 457 games with an 81% winning record, including a remarkable 30-game winning streak from 1940 to 1943. Known for his composure and integrity, he once reflected with pride that he never received a technical foul throughout his coaching career.

Mr. Isom pursued higher education at the University of Illinois before earning his master’s degree and superintendent credentials from the University of Washington. Beyond his service to schools, he was active in the community—serving as Master of the Lynden Masonic Lodge, judging the Lynden Fishing Derby for 30 years, and participating in the Lynden Order of the Eastern Star.

In 1989, the district honored his contributions by naming its newest school after him. Isom Elementary, which opened that same year, continues his legacy by serving students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

Mr. Isom passed away in 1992 at age 87, leaving behind a strong example of leadership, character and commitment to the Lynden community—values that continue to guide our district today.
